Grameenphone's parent company Telenor is planning to introduce new digital services for its customers, said a senior executive of Telenor.
Rolv-Erik Spilling, chief executive officer of Telenor Digital, has also expressed an earnest interest to be a true partner in Bangladesh's efforts to digitalise the nation.
“We want to be an active partner to build Bangladesh as a digital society from our soul interests,” said Rolv-Erik Spilling in an interview with Dhaka Tribune. He arrived in the city to launch smartphones with Mozilla fairfox operating system.
The CEO said the company has a special plan for Grameenphone subscribers and will launch a number of digital services as offered in some Nordic countries.
“We have some plans to offer services like conference solutions and Facebook for fashion and solutions in different countries including Bangladesh.” He said they also plan to launch a music service in the country soon, which has already been introduced in Pakistan and Nordic countries.
Rolv-Erik shared his thoughts to bring an application to be used on remote control for security purpose.
“We are trying to localise the services, for which a local platform is needed.” “At the same time the company also wants to facilitate the innovation of local contents and services that can be with any individuals or any organisations.”
“I think what Bangladesh lacks today. We want to understand the opportunities of services we have……and of course we will invest more into the areas, especially on digital services,” Rolv-Erik told Dhaka Tribune.
Telenor Digital creates globally scalable solutions within the next-generation communication services, cloud computing, e-commerce and the Internet of Things.
The company also enables global distribution of its own services as well as those of a third party. It supports new ventures within digital entrepreneurship.
Rolv-Erik cited the construction of ekhanei.com site in Bangladesh as part of Telenor's interest in classified sites.
The company launched same type of classified services in Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Philippines and Brazil.
“Classified sites are very powerful and can dominate the Internet uses in a country. Actually classifieds are the top sites in any country and people are always interested to go through these sites through their smartphones.
Classified sites and mobile Internet have a very good relationship, said Rolv-Erik. Telenor is establishing global infrastructures in Grameenphone for launching digital services.
“We are building global infrastructures in Bangladesh. They will help the subscribers enjoy the global services,” the top official of Telenor said.
“In emerging markets mobile Internet can play an important role. So we are making efforts to ensure Internet for all.” Telenor has launched low-cost smartphones with Mozilla Firefox operating system in different countries around the globe.
Such handsets have also been brought to the Bangladeshi market. Telenor Digital CEO said most of the people never think of operating system in smartphones.
“Mass people never bother about operating system – be it Firefox or windows. The users are interested in services and offers, price and outside features. That’s why we are mostly concentrating on the services.”
