The low lying areas of Chittagong city were submerged in waist-high water yesterday because of the heavy downpour, resulting in immense sufferings for city dwellers.
Showers that started Saturday morning turned into heavy rainfall and continued till yesterday afternoon,said Chittagong Divisional Met office sources.
The met office recorded about 100 millimetres of rainfall in 24 hours starting 3pm on Thursday, said the sources.
The low-lying areas of the port city, particularly Bakalia, Nasirabad, Patenga, Dewanbazar, Chawkbazar, Agrabad, Halishahar, Kapasgola, Chandgaon, Shulakbahar, Enayet Bazar, Boropol, Muradpur, Sholoshahar, Bahaddarhat and Probartak intersection, went under water.
No motorised vehicles were able to ply the roads, only rickshaws and rickshaw-vans were seen as modes of transportation.
A resident of the Chawkbazar area said commuters suffered as the roadside drains were overflowing with dirty water.
Commuters to offices and different educational institutions suffered the most. Many of them were seen wading through waist-high water as they could not get vehicles to go to their work places.
Townspeople blamed the poor sewerage and drainage system of the city for the water -lodging.
They urged authorities concerned to solve the water-logging problem as soon as possible.
Abdur Rahim, public relations officer of Chittagong City Corporation (CCC), said although some areas went under water, the CCC authorities were trying to pump water out of the city.
Moderate to heavy showers are likely to occur in most places over Rajshahi, Rangpur, Khulna, Barisal, Dhaka, Chittagong and Sylhet divisions, Met office sources said.
Movement of ships was also disrupted because of high tide coupled with heavy rainfall.
