Update : 15 Sep 2014, 07:01 PM

The High Court yesterday ordered the deputy commissioners and police supers of five southern districts of the country to take locally made three-wheelers off the highways within 72-hours.

The districts are Barisal, Faridpur, Madaripur, Rajbari and Khulna.

A High Court bench comprising of Justice Salma Masud Chowdhury and Khoshruzzaman passed the order.

As per the directive, all types of three-wheelers and illegal vehicles, including Nasiman, Kariman, Bhotbhoti, Mahindra and easy bikes, should be banned from highways. The court asked the authorities to submit a compliance report within two weeks.

The court also issued a rule asking why an order should not be issued to implement the Motor Vehicle Ordinance and to stop the plying of these vehicles on roads and highways.

A total of 20 people including the Secretary of Home Ministry, Inspector General of Police, Communication Secretary, DIG highway, BRTA Chairman and the DCs and SPs of the five districts were asked to reply to the rule within four weeks.

On Sunday, Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh (HRPB) filed a petition with the HC seeking its directive to reduce the number of road accidents.

Advocate Manzil Murshid represented the petitioner while Deputy Attorney General Rajik Al Jalil moved for the state side.
