Update : 02 Sep 2014, 07:20 PM

The ninth international inter-university photography exhibition by North South University is under way at the National Art Gallery of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy, featuring entries selected through a contest in which students from 66 universities and colleges from across the world participated.

The eight-day exhibition, being hosted by the photography club of NSU (NSUPC), began on August 29 with 150 single entries and 10 photo-stories.

Thirty-five of them have received awards under two broad categories marked as colour and black-and-white media, subsequently divided into subcatagories such as action, portrait, life, architecture, nature, still life, landscape and photo-story.

The participants, through their photographic works, sought to capture the many colours of life strewn across the length and breadth of their individual countries. They looked for the magic in real-life moments and tried to bring it to the foreground.

The photo winning the first prize in Action category shows a young percussionist playing dhol in a festival. The face of the musician is subtly visible alongside a red-coloured background. Titled “Coming Back to Life,” it was taken by Dhrubo Paul of Bangladesh University of Engineering Technology (BUET).

The third position in the Architecture category (black-and-white media) was obtained by Tom Price from Blackpool and the Fylde College, who depicted the subtlety of a multi-layered apartment.

“Portrait Colour” by Rachael Darcie Nellist of Manchester Metropolitan University has been crowned the first prize in Portrait category. It shows a woman with an expressive face against the background of sun.

Artur Gutowski from Polish National Film School won the third prize in the category of conceptual colour for his “Alone.” The photographer captures a densely-fogged landscape with a man taking morning strolls. “A Refuge For Light” by Shadman Shahid from Pathshala South Asian Media Academy tries to portray life behind busy parks, streets and intersections.
