Janmashtami, the celebration of the birthday of Lord Krishna and one of the biggest religious festivals of Hindus, was celebrated countrywide yesterday with much religious fervor and enthusiasm.
Our Rajshahi correspondent reports: The Hindu community in Rajshahi city celebrated Janmashtami, marking the birthday of Lord Krishna amid much festivity and with religious zeal.
The day's programmes included worship of Lord Krishna, Geeta Jagna, Kirtan, discussions and peace processions.
Marking the festival, Janmashtami Celebration Parishad brought out a colourful rally from Hanumanjir Akhra Mondir and paraded through different city streets.
Deputy Commissioner Mejbah Uddin Chowdhury, Indian Assistant High Commissioner Sandip Mitra, Janmashtami Celebration Parishad President Alok Kumar Das and General Secretary Tapan Kumar Sen jointed the rally, among others.
In Khulna, different religious and socio-cultural organizations arranged programmes including discussions, prayers to Lord Krishna and songs in his praise.
Thousands of people joined the traditional Janmashtami procession which was brought out around noon from Arja Dharmashava temple premises in the city.
The procession paraded through different roads amid tight security and ended back at the same point.
State Minister for Fisheries and Live Stock Naryan Chandra Chanda inaugurated the procession, which was attended, among others, by the law maker of Khulna-2 constituency Mizanur Rahman Mizan.
Earlier, a discussion was held at the temple premises, which was addressed by Chanda who was the chief guest.
In Gaibandha, different Hindu religious organizations chalked out elaborate programmes throughout the district.
The programmes included prayers to Lord Krishna, puja gatherings, Kirtan, Ramayan gaan and recitation from the holy Geeta and the Jagya.
Prasad was distributed and poor people were fed, as supplication for divine blessing to bring about peace and progress in the country.
A discussion organized by Bangladesh Puja Utjapon Parishad (BPUP), district unit, was also held on the premises of the V-AID Road Kalibari Temple in the town in the afternoon.
Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Advocate Fazle Rabbi Miah, addressed the function as the chief guest and Deputy Commissioner M. Ehsan-e-Elahi, Gaibandha Zilla Parishad Administrator Advocate Syed Shams-ul-Alam Hiru and Gaibandha Municipality Mayor M. Shamsul Alam were present as special guests.
Our Netrakona correspondent said different socio-cultural and religious organizations, including the district Puja celebration committee, chalked out various programmes for the day.
A traditional Janmashtami procession was brought out in the district town in the morning from Norasingha Zior Akra temple at Barabazer under the auspices of the district Janmastami celebration committee.
Deputy Minister for youth and sports Arif Khan Joy and the Janmashtami celebration committee leaders formally led the procession which paraded through the main roads of the town.
In Faridpur, our correspondent experienced a colorful rally, with a portrait of Lord Krishna at the front, which was brought out in the morning from the DC office premises and paraded through the main roads of the town before ending at Kabi Jasimuddin Hall.
A discussion meeting on the teachings of Lord Krishna was held at Kabi Jasimuddin Hall. Awami League central advisory committee member SM Nurunnabi attended the meeting as the chief guest. The programme was chaired by ADC Gen Md Abdur Rashid.
The day was also celebrated in Barguna, Barisal, Thakurgaon, Bagerhat, Kurigram, Bhola, Brahmanbaria, Bogra, Comilla, Feni, Gopalganj, Habiganj, Jamalpur, Jessore, Joypurhat, Kushtia,Madaripur, Naogaon and Narail districts.
