Nepalese energy minister Radha Kumari Gyawali will arrive in Dhaka on August 5 to enhance cooperation in the field of energy for mutual benefits, BSS reported.
During her visit, the Nepalese minister is expected to discuss hydro-power trade with Bangladesh, power division sources said. Electricity trade with neighbours has tremendous potential for unlocking Bangladesh's long-term energy constraints in a cost-effective manner.
Currently, Bangladesh is importing 500MW of power from India through Bheramara-Baharampur grid connectivity.
This cross-border trading with India opens up possibility for Bangladesh for power trading with Nepal and Bhutan as well. According to the power division, a negotiation for power trading with Myanmar is also going on. Under this process 500MW hydro-power is expected to be traded by 2017 from Myanmar.
