Ekram Hossain, a much-talked-about yaba dealer of Teknaf upazila of Cox’s Bazar was shot during a “gunfight” with members of the Detective Branch of police yesterday.
The gun-fight took place around 4am in Darianagar area along the Marine Drive Road in the district.
Ekram, 32, son of late Haji Fazal Ahmed of the upazila, was enlisted among top seven of the 763 names of yaba traders in the list of the Home Ministry.
There were 12 cases pending against him, said Cox’s Bazar DB police Officer-in-Charge Manzur Alam.
He said being tipped off, a team of DB went to the Marine Drive Road and tried to stop a jeep carrying yaba dealers.
The yaba dealers started firing at law enforcers from the car, in retaliation police fired back. After an hour of gunfight, police nabbed three including Ekram while others managed to flee towards the mountains, said the OC.
The DB members recovered 3000 pieces of yaba tablets, one LG, two rounds of bullets, two cartridge shells and seized the jeep, he said.
The two detained are Azmat Ullah, 26 and Faruq Ahmad, 30.
Ekram was admitted to the Chittagong Medical College Hospital.
A case has been filed in this connection, said the OC.
During the months of March and April, six top yaba traders were killed in gunfights with law enforcers in Teknaf while eight were shot.
On Tuesday, one yaba trader was shot in a gunfight with Border Guard Bangladesh in the same upazila.
