DMP: Police not gobbling up Destiny properties

Update : 09 Jul 2014, 08:44 PM

The Dhaka Metropolitan Police yesterday claimed that it was not gobbling up or using any properties of Destiny Group, a multi-level marketing company.

“The DMP commissioner is just a receiver of Destiny properties [since February 28 last year] as per a court order while the police are looking after those as part of their duty,” said Monirul Islam, spokesperson of the DMP.

Also a joint commissioner of DB police, Monirul made the remarks while addressing a press briefing at the DMP headquarters protesting a report published in a national Bangla daily on Monday.

Labelling the report as “baseless,” he said the police had been carrying out their duties as per existing rules. “The DMP did not submit any application to become the receiver of Destiny property; the court gave it to the DMP, which submits a report on the property to the court every month.”

The Anti-Corruption Commission is the plaintiff of the Destiny case; it investigated the case and pressed the charge sheet. Monirul said: “May be the ACC was not given the task considering its shortage of manpower...”

He also refuted the claim that the police had been using 50 vehicles of Destiny Group. “The police seized only 27 vehicles as per the court order. Of those, four are out of order and lying at Uttara and Mirpur police stations while three were handed over to Destiny consumers. The police are using only 20 vehicles for them.”

Monirul said these vehicles had been used in different operational activities of the force in public interest.

About taking money from two cinemas – Ananda and Chhondo in Farmgate – he said the police were not taking any money for personal purposes. “A joint account was opened to deposit the earnings of the cinemas after paying off the costs. The employees of the cinemas have been working there before the court handed over the charge to the DMP.”

Monirul also refuted the claim made in the news item that the police were taking money from rent of flats owned by Destiny owners. “The police are not taking care of the flats and the court is aware of it.”
