The government has directed the banks to open accounts for the street and working children for the safety of their hard earned money, Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith told the parliament.
Replying to a question from Awami League MP Didarul Alam (Chittagong-4), the minister said some NGOs and banks had been working to open bank accounts for the street children.
“The main objective is to make opportunities for the working and street children to secure their earning by bringing them under banking services,” Muhith told in the written scripts presented to the House. It was not further discussed in the House.
He said the move would make the working and street children educated in socio-economic issues.
The minister said the NGOs and the bank officials would work as their mentors for proper utilisation of their deposit.
The culture of deposit would reduce the possibility of being derailed and addicted to drugs, said Muhith.
Children having the bank accounts would be able to get loans from the banks concerned after they turn 18 years of age so that they could develop themselves as small entrepreneurs.
