Villagers' clash kills one in Gazipur

A person has been killed in a clash between two groups of villagers over installation of an electric pole on a land at Nishchintopur village under Sreepur upazila in the district on Friday afternoon.

The deceased was identified as Aktaruzzaman, 45, son of Bazlur Rahman in the village.

Sub-inspector of Sreepur police station Shafikul Islam confirmed to the Dhaka Tribune about the death.

Humayun Kabir, the younger brother of the deceased was also injured in the clash.

Locals said a group of villagers of Nishchintopur village has been trying to install an electric pole in the middle point of a piece of land owned by Aktaruzzaman and Humayun Kabir. However, they were protesting this attempt and requested to install the pole at a corner side of the land.

On Friday after Jummah prayer, Abdul Momin, Jalal Uddin, Abdul Kadir of the village locked into an altercation with Aktaruzzaman and his brother Humayun Kabir following the feud.

At one stage, Abdul Momin, Jalal Uddin, Abdul Kadir and their associates attacked on Aktaruzzaman and his brother with locally made sharp weapons, leaving Aktaruzzaman dead on the spot.

SI Shafikul Islam said locals caught Momin and another woman and handed them over to the police.
