Transport leaders call off strike

Update : 05 Jun 2014, 08:16 PM

Transport leaders have decided to finally withdraw the strike that was postponed earlier.

The decision came at a meeting held at the Communication Ministry yesterday with Communication Minister Obaidul Quader in the chair.

The meeting was called to resolve the crisis resulted from enforcement of the strike in northern part of the country and Mymensingh area.

Shipping Minister Shajahan Khan, State Minister for Cooperatives Mashiur Rahman Ranga, Dhaka Divisional Commissioner Zillar Rahman, Rajshahi Divisional Commissioner Helal Uddin Ahmed, Road Transport Association’s Secretary General Khandaker Enayet Ullah and Bangladesh Road Transport Workers Federation Secretary Osman Ali attended the meeting.

Following the meeting, Obaidul Quader told reporters the transport leaders had decided to withdraw the strike taking into account the fruitful discussion with the government and had asked local leaders to restore normalcy in transport operations outside Dhaka.

“The government has already instructed the law enforcement agencies not to allow easy bikes and human hauliers, locally known as nosimon, korimon and votvoti, on highways across the country.

“The Communication Ministry will request the Commerce Ministry officially to stop importing machineries of these vehicles,” he said.

“The authorities concerned were instructed to remove makeshift stalls from local and national highways,” said the minister.

“It is really tough to completely eradicate extortion by the police but it is possible to control this by taking necessary measures,” he added.
