More housing for police, army, bureaucrats

Update : 04 Jun 2014, 08:45 PM

The Detailed Area Plan (DAP) review committee approved three residential projects for armed forces, police officials and bureaucrats yesterday.

The committee also asked the Rajdhani Unnayan Katripaksha (Rajuk) to make it compulsory to install effluent treatment plants (ETP) in order to get approval for new housing project plans.

The approval was given at a cabinet meeting with Housing and Public Works Minister Mosharraf Hossain in the chair.

Committee members – Land Minister Shamsur Rahman Sharif, Water Resources Minister Anisul Islam Mahmud, Hosuing Secretary Golam Rabbani and Rajuk Chairman Jainal Abedin Bhuiyan – attended the meeting.

After the meeting, Mosharraf Hossain told reporters in a briefing that the committee had decided to approve three residential projects of the armed forces, police officials and BCS admin cadre officers in the DAP area as the applicants showed commitment to fulfilling the requirements and conditions of Rajuk.

“They agreed to install ETPs according to the requirement in their projects. They will also keep space, wetlands and canals and ensure water management and water modeling systems and involve Buet experts in their projects. Considering their proposals, the committee has decided to approve the projects in principle,” he added.

The housing project of armed forces ‘Jalshiri’ will ensure the accommodation of around 66,000 families of the members of armed forces.

The minister said, “The housing project for police officers will be established in between the Kuril flyover and Purbachal project area. The authority will ensure separate concrete drainage systems for storm water and waste management. No waste will go through the drains. It will not obstruct any water body or wetland.”

The housing project of civil bureaucrats will be established opposite the Turag River. They have bought high land for the project. They assured the authority of establishing ETPs and adequate drainage systems in their projects. In the application, it was assured that no waste would be dumped in the river, the minister said.

Mosharraf said, “The Rajuk was asked to approve only those projects which will assure that they will have their own ETP systems along with the other conditions of the authority.”

“The authority will also visit the project areas in the DAP area which were given approval earlier. The project authority and building owners will be asked to set ETPs or soak pits,” he said.

When asked about viability of establishing ETPs in every building, the minister said, “Off course, it is viable. There are ETPs for industrial and domestic use. The building owners will have to set up domestic ETPs. They can also set up domestic ETPs by making consortiums or groups. But, it will be mandatory.”
