National Committee stages sit-in in Bagerhat

The National Committee to Protect Oil, Gas, Mineral Resources, Power and Ports have staged a sit-in in Bagerhat protesting the government plans to set up a power plant in Rampal and Mongla where the world’s largest mangrove forest,"a recognised UNESCO World Heritage Site, maybe in threat."

The civil platform addressed the protest rally around 11.30am on Wednesday at District commissioner office premises.

Engineer Sheikh Md Shahidullah was the chief guest in the programme.

Addressing the rally, Prof Anu Mohammad, member secretary of the committee, said: “People will resist any activity that harms the country’s lone mangrove forest, which has protected people from natural calamities for centuries.”

The mangrove forest in the Sundarbans, a unique for biodiversity and protection against natural disaster would be destroyed if coal-fired power plant was set up, the speakers said in the programme.

Ruhin Hossain Prince of Communist Party of Bangladesh and Gonotantrik Bam Morcha’s convener Zonayed Saki and Biplobi Workers Party Saiful Haq among others were present.

The National committee also announced a cultural march adjacent to Sundarbans protesting installation of coal-fired power plant in Rampal and Mongla from August 18 to 20.
