At least five people, including a child, have been killed and 22 others injured in separate road accidents in the district on Monday.
The deceased were identified as Rafikul Islam, 35, son of Noyom Uddin, of Boali village under Sakhipur upazila, Kuddus, 40, son of late Younus Ali, of Kulaha village under Ghatail upaizla, Mozibar Rahman, 45, son of Daraz Ali, of Shaflabari village of Gopalpur upazila and Sami, 10, son of Moazzem Hossain, of Jamtoli village of Sirajganj Sadar upazila.
The identity of a woman, 22, could not be known immediately.
Anowar Hossain, sub-inspector of Tangail Model police station, said: “Rafikul fell from his bike after a battery-run auto-rickshaw hit it on the Dhaka-Tangail Highway at Bishawas Betka area around 12 noon.”
“He died on the spot when a bus rammed over him,” he added.
In another accident, a passenger bus hit Kuddus at Porabai area of the upazila arround 10:15am, leaving him dead on the spot.
Mizan sub-inspector of Ghatail police station confirmed the incident.
Officer-in-Charge of Madhupur Police Station Mozibar Rahman said: “Auto- rickshaw driver Mozibar received injuries when a speedy truck hit his auto rickshaw from behind at Madhupur Thana Mor area under Madhupur upazila around 11:00am.”
Mozibar succumbed to his injuries on the way to Madhupur upazila health complex, he said.
Basail police Station Sub-Inspector Aminul Islam said a Sirajganj bound passenger bus from Dhaka fell into a road-side ditch after the driver lost his control over the steering wheel at Patkhaguri area on Dhaka-Tangail highway at around 4:00pm, leaving Sami dead on the spot and 23 others injured.
The injured were admitted to Tangail General Hospital where an unidentified woman, 22, succumbed to her injuries at 5:15pm, he added.
