The Armed Police Battalion (APBn) members at the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport have arrested 15 Saudi Arab expatriates with 22 gold bars immediate after their arrival at Dhaka on Sunday evening.
Alamgir Hossain Shimul, additional superintendent of the APBn, told the Dhaka Tribune that they arrested 15 Saudi expatriates with 22 gold bars weighting to around 2.5 kilograms while they had been leaving the airport around 7pm.
“All the 15 persons arrived at Dhaka by two separate flights of the Saudi Arabian Airlines and Biman Bangladesh Airlines,” said the APBn official.
In a reply, the APBn declined to make comments on how could the expatriates could be able to cross the Customs checking inside the airport.
According to sources at the airport, around 40 expatriates, including 36 of Saudi Arab, were arrested in last five days for smuggling of gold and carrying gold evading customs duties.
However, mysteries remain shrouded over how the expatriates could cross the checking by the personnel of the Custom Department inside the airport.
