SERAC-Bangladesh formed a human chain at the Mymensingh railway station yesterday to mark ‘World No Tobacco Day’.
Speakers at the program called upon the government to impose high taxes on tobacco products so that tobacco becomes expensive.
They claimed that the prices of tobacco products have remained almost stagnant in recent years, even though prices of regular commodities have increased a lot over the last few years.
Referring to the World Bank and World Health Organization’s study, speakers said a 10% tax increase on tobacco and tobacco products would help to decrease death rates at an anticipatory level in both high and low income countries.
