NHRC chief: Leave blame game, work for good governance

Update : 29 May 2014, 07:54 PM

National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Chairman Dr Mizanur Rahman yesterday stressed the need for establishing good governance rather than resorting to any blame game.

“Nobody is above the rule of law. Good governance is another name of the rule of law,” he said at a workshop on victims of trafficking in Jessore, adding: “Let the law take its own course.”

Rights Jessore, a human rights organisation, organised the workshop with the support of the NHRC, with journalists, police officials, human rights defenders and with NGO officials in attendance.

Pointing out that human trafficking is a violation of human rights, NHRC chief Mizanur said, “Students of Dhaka University often fall victim to human rights abuses. The government knows this.”

The Rights Jessore has so far repatriated 400 people from India and 90 others from Iran with the support of the government, the workshop was told.

Deputy Commissioner Mostafizur Rahman, Superintendent of Police Anisur Rahman, Executive Director of Rights Jessore Binoy Krishna Mallick, among others, spoke at the workshop.

Jessore Senior District and Sessions Judge Dr Md Golam Murtuza Mozumder presided over the workshop.
