Barisal University students clash with transports workers

Students of Barisal University have engaged in a clash with transport workers following altercations over bus fares and bus stoppages.

At least 10 persons were injured in the clash in front of Barisal University campus at Karnakathi on the eastern bank of the Kirtankhola River on Thursday morning.

The angry students also vandalised three vehicles during the clash.

Police took the situation under control around 1pm by charging with batons and firing rubber bullets and tear shells, Barisal Bandar police station Officer-in-Charge Ziaul Islam said.

Communications on the highways connecting at least 17 routes of Barisal-Bhola-Patuakhali-Barguna disrupted for about four hours as the transport workers blocked the highway.

Students of the varsity declared boycott of classes and examinations till punishment of the attackers.

A tripartite meeting of the university, road transport owners and workers association and law enforcing agencies would be held on Friday, Deputy Commissioner of Barisal Metropolitan Police Abu Raihan Md Saleh said.
