Police have arrested a listed accused of the murder of Fulgazi Upazila Chairman Ekramul Haque Ekram from Bornal area under Matiranga upazila in Khagrachhari district on the early hours of Thursday.
The arrestee was identified as Belal Hossain alias Belal Pathoary 45, son of late Raja Mia of Islampur under Fulgazi upazila in Feni district and also the general secretary of Anandapur Union Awami League.
Khagrachhari Superintendent of Police SK Mizanur Rahman said acting on a tip-off a platoon of police led by Matiranga Thana Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Mainuddin Khan raided a house of Bashar Mia alias Dubaiwala Masud at Barnal village under the same police station in the district at 2.30am on Thursday and arrested Belal.
Belal was the close aide of the slain Fulgazi upazila chairman. Killers planned to kill Ekram following the information given by Belal, SP confirmed.
“Belal might be fleeing into the India crossing border," SP said.
“Belal is now in Matiranga police custody and he would be handed over to Feni police after completing legal procedure.”
