CNG-run auto-rickshaw strike postponed

Update : 28 May 2014, 09:26 AM

The 72-hour CNG-run auto-rickshaw strike has been postponed till June 9.

Dhaka Metropolitan CNG-run Auto-rickshaw Malik Samity Oikya Parishad president Barkat Ullah Bulu has told the Dhaka Tribune.

On Tuesday, the parishad called the strike demanding realisation of their three-point demand, including the implementation of the recommendation for extending economic lifespan of the vehicle by four more years from the existing lifetime of 11 year, based on BUET recommendations.

The decision has come from a meeting between Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) and Dhaka Metropolitan CNG-run Auto-rickshaw Malik Samity Oikya Parishad.

Bulu, however, warned to continue the strike after June 9 if their demands would not be met by the time.

The government banned all two-stroke auto-rickshaws in urban areas in 2002 giving permission to run the four-stroke CNG-run three-wheelers.

The lifespan was set at nine years.

However, it was later extended up to 11 years two times amid strong demand from the owners' association.

Nearly 13,000 CNG-run three-wheelers are now plying the city streets commercially and the economic lifespan of an auto-rickshaw is 11 years.
