'Osman-Nur conversation leak a conspiracy'

Update : 27 May 2014, 01:57 PM

Ruling party lawmaker Shamim Osman is not involved in the seven killings of Narayanganj, father in-law of slain panel mayor Nazrul Islam, Shahidul Islam, has said.

“A vested quarter is trying to engage in dirty politics with Shamim Osman,” he told the media in a press conference at Dhaka Reporters Unity on Tuesday.

The remark came days after a “leaked” phone conversation between Shamim Osman and seven murder chief accused Nur Hossain after the killings.

Osman admitted the conversation and insisted that he urged Nur Hossain to surrender. He later said he was in fear of his life after the conversation was made public.

“Those who publicised the phone conversation are the real people behind the killings,” Shahidul Islam said.

He added: “If they knew where Nur Hossain was, why was he not arrested?”

“The vested quarter is out to fish in troubled waters,” he alleged. However, the father in-law of Nazrul Islam never specified who were the “vested quarter.”

“They are trying to divert the investigation (of the case) process,” he claimed.

Shahidul Islam was reading out a statement at the press conference organised on the day that marks one month in passing of the Narayanganj seven murders.

He avoided any questions at the end of the presser.

Earlier on Saturday, Shahid Chairman called a press conference at his house over the same issue. But, he failed to hold it in face of people's anger.

Later, he talked to journalists at Press Club and denied Shamim Osman's involvement in Nur's escape.

On April 27, panel mayor Nazrul Islam, lawyer Chandan Sarkar and five of their affiliates were abducted. Later, their bodies were found in the Sitalakhya river.

Nazrul's father in-law alleged that RAB took Tk6 crore for the killing. Fingers were pointed on three officers who were later arrested after a series of delay.

However, the main accused in this case, another ruling party-backed local Ward Counsillor, Nur Hossain, has remained aloof. RAB said he fled away to India.
