Just into five months of its five-year tenure, the Awami League government has started facing difficulty in dealing with incidents like abductions, killings and forced disappearance across the country.
The party leaders think if such incidents increase further, it will go beyond control and the opposition will get a chance to intensify the anti-government movement.
Several ruling party leaders and ministers say taking lessons from the previous tenure, they planned to run the government smoothly. But these incidents, including the seven murders in Narayanganj and killing of Fulgazi upazila chairman, have embarrassed the government.
These leaders said if the government failed to deal with the issue effectively, they might pay the price for the failure.
Nuh-Ul-Alam Lenin, presidium member of the Awami League, told the Dhaka Tribune that these incidents had embarrassed them.
“Any kind of unusual incidents is a matter of concern for the ruling party,” he said. “Those who are committing such crimes are enemy of the society.”
He said some culprits are committing such crimes to create trouble for the government. “It may be done for creating unrest in the country,” he said.
“The government will deal with the matter with an iron hand.”
Suranjit Sengupta, a member of AL advisory board, said the incidents in Narayanganj and Feni prove that the administration and law enforcers become weak day by day. “The people of the country are offended by these matters,” the ruling party lawmaker said.
Preferring anonymity, a cabinet minister told the Dhaka Tribune that they got embarrassed by these unexpected incidents. “All achievements of the government are being destroyed only for this criminal mischief,” said the minister who holds an important post in the party.
However, Industries Minister Amir Hossain Amu and Food Minister Advocate Quamrul Islam have declined to comment on the matter.
Quamrul Islam asked this correspondent to contact with high-profile ministers. “I do not want to say anything about the issue,” he said.
