US Ambassador Dan Mozena has said the accountability of RAB is now more important than ever, especially in the context of the recent allegations about their abuse of power.
“As every Bangladeshi knows, recent events have cast a dark shadow over the Rapid Action Battalion. All are aware of the allegations against some of the RAB members for abuses and misconduct,” he said at a certificate awarding programme at the RAB headquarters in the capital yesterday.
“But government support for this intensive, eight week-long training course to strengthen the effectiveness of the RAB Internal Enquiries Cell makes clear that the senior leadership of the government is endeavouring to hold accountable members of the Rapid Action Battalion,” he said.
A total of 23 individuals from the Rapid Action Battalion participated in the training assisted by the US, said a US embassy press release.
“Nobody has a greater interest in holding those accountable who commit abuse their power in the name of RAB than those members of RAB itself who work with integrity and honesty,” Mozena said.
The RAB officials should carry out these investigations fearlessly and share the conclusions in a transparent manner that which will help build greater public confidence and trust in the organisation, the ambassador suggested.
