DU students demand Prothom Alo editor's apology

Update : 20 May 2014, 03:28 PM

Several Dhaka-university based cultural organisations have staged demonstration against what they say is “a distortion of history” by the Bangla national daily the Prothom Alo.

They brought out a procession in the TSC area of Dhaka university at 5:30pm on Tuesday.

Following the landslide victory of BJP in India Lok Sabha election, Prothom Alo published a short biography of the party's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi.

In the biography the newspaper used the 'India-Pakistan war in 1971' phrase that appeared to be denoting the Bengali's liberation war. This later induced repercussions in the social media.

Citing the way the newspaper phrased the liberation war as contradictory to the spirit of it, the demonstrator demanded apology from the editor of the daily.

The organisations are Dhaka University Debating Society, Dhaka University Film Society, Dhaka University Tourist Society, Slogan 71, Dhaka University IT Society, Prabhat Pheri among others.
