The agitated locals have blocked the Feni-Maizedi Regional Highway in protest against the killing of Fulgazi Upazila Chairman Ekramul Haq.
Witnesses said the locals along with the Chhatra League leaders and activists put a barricade on the Feni-Maziedi Regional Highway following the murder of the upazila chairman around 12 noon.
They set fire to tires in order to halt the vehicular movement on the highway and vandalised some five to six vehicles.
Officer-in-Charge of Feni Sadar police station Abul Kalam Azad said: “The protesters are staging an agitation programme by stopping the vehicular movement on the highway since 12 noon. They blockaded the road in the Mahipal area.
Police are trying to remove them from the highway,” he added.
The vehicular movement on the highway has been halted till filing the report at 5:30pm.
Earlier in the day, the chairman had been shot and burnt to death as some unidentified miscreants set fire to his micro-bus in the Academy area of Feni town.
Police said miscreants first shot at the micro-bus of Ekramul Haq and then torched it with Ekramul inside,leaving him dead on the spot and four others injured.
Ekramul, 47, was the ruling Awami League-backed Upazila Chairman of Fulgazi, Feni.
He was also president of Awami League, Fulgazi Upazlia unit.
