Update : 18 May 2014, 09:20 PM

A parliamentary watchdog has sought information from the Communication Ministry on the statuses of government cars used by various high officials and organisations.

The decision was made in the first meeting of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Communication Ministry yesterday.

Nazmul Haque Prodhan, a member of the committee, told reporters that: “We have heard a lot of complaints about government officials flouting rules in using government vehicles. That is why, the parliamentary watchdog wants to remain well informed about the matter.”

Meeting sources said the committee had also sought information on the accounts and profitability status of the Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation (BRTC).

Information about who are using the vehicles owned by the BRTC was also sought.

Akabbar Hossain, chairman of the parliamentary body, told reporters in a briefing that: “The [Communication] Ministry told us about adding more vehicles to the BRTC’s lot. But the committee told the ministry that it needed to provide a comprehensive picture of its vehicles first.”
