Kamaruzzaman's appeal hearing May 18

Update : 15 May 2014, 03:34 AM

The apex court has set the date for commencing the appeal hearing of death-sentenced Jamaat-e-Islami Assistant Secretary General Mohammad Kamaruzzaman.

The five-member appellate bench of the Supreme Court, led by Chief Justice Md Muzammel Hossain, set May 18 as the date to begin the hearing of the convicted war criminal.

The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court set the hearing date on Thursday morning.

On May 9 last year, International Crimes Tribunal 2 awarded the death penalty for Jamaat leader and former Al-Badr man Kamaruzzaman on two out of the seven charges brought against him.

He was given the death penalty for genocide at Sohagpur and murder of Golam Mostafa. Tribunal said “it would not be fair” if Kamaruzzaman was not penalised with capital punishment.

The Jamaat leader was given life in prison for killing Badiuzzaman and murdering five, and ten years of jail for torturing lecturer Syed Abdul Hannan.

On June 6, Kamaruzzaman's defence appealed against the Tribunal verdict at the Supreme Court.
