Transport owners and workers have called an indefinite strike in Chandpur demanding a stop to the extortion and harassment on highways.
The strike was enforced into effect on Tuesday and no vehicular movements were seen on the Dhaka-Chandpur highway until evening.
The transport owners and workers placed a seven-day-ultimatum to the authorities and threatening to shut all vehicular activities in Chandpur.
They alleged that the transport business was at peril for harassment and extortion from police and unauthorized labour organisations.
Chandpur Bus Transport Owners’ Association General Secretary Soyeeb Ahmed told the Dhaka Tribune they want exemplary punishment of culprits behind extortion on the Dhaka-Chandpur highway.
