Ward commissioner and acting mayor of Kaliganj municipality was chopped to death by miscreants in Kuthipara area at Kaliganj town of the district on Tuesday morning.
He was identified as Ismail Hossain, 58, son of Abdur Rahman Mandal, of Chapali village in Kaliganj upazila.
Establishing supremacy over the area might be one of the reasons behind the killing, Kalioanj police station officer-in-charge Anwar Hossain said.
Locals said Ismail was going to Kaliganj Kuthipara from Chapali around 8:30am riding on his motor-bike.
When he reached near Kuthipara, Shahjahan Ali, son of Lutfar Rahman, along with others swooped on him with sharp weapon, leaving him injured in critical condition.
He was taken to Jessore General Hospital where he died about 11am.
Ismail’s son Ripon said: “Shahjahan hacked his father in front of a huge number of villagers.”
Police could not arrest anyone in this connection. No case was filed till Tuesday evening, the OC said.
He was buried at the village graveyard after autopsy, the police said.
Locals said Shajahan joined the ruling Awami league from the BNP on March 26 of this year.
