BCL members halt exam at RU

Update : 13 May 2014, 07:57 AM

A group of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) members of Rajshahi University (RU) unit have stopped an RU department examination as a BCL man failed to attend it because of illness.

Witnesses said a group of BCL leaders and activists led by RU unit vice-president Rana Chowdhury, joint-secretary Mahbubur Rahaman Polash and environmental affairs secretary Mustakim Billah went to the Islamic History and Culture department at around 9:00am and locked a room where the final examination of course 5 of masters was scheduled to be held.

Later, the teachers of the department broke the key and took initiatives to start the exam at 9:30am. However, the BCL activists forced the students to leave the exam hall.

However, some 15-20 students participated in the exam ignoring the obstacles. At one stage, the BCL members went on a rampage and vandalised the exam hall and the office of the the department, said students.

The department authorities later postponed the exam in the face of BCL agitation.

The examinees told the Dhaka Tribune that Mehedi Hasan, RU unit BCL vice-president, was an examinee of the course. However, he failed to join the exam as he was sick.

“The BCL men wanted to halt the exam as Mehedi failed to attend it.”

However, RU unit BCL President Mizanur Rahman denied the allegation saying “BCL was not involved in the vandalism.”

He said: “The general students of the department requested the authorities not to hold the exam as one of their classmate was sick however the authorities did not pay heed to their requests.”

While contacted, RU Proctor Tariqul Hasan told newsmen: “We will look into the matter and take steps against the responsible ones after investigation.”
