Update : 07 May 2014, 07:32 PM

The student of Chittagong’s Premier University who was shot by miscreants on Sunday succumbed to his injuries at a private hospital in Dhaka, yesterday afternoon.

The student was shot after he protested a mugging by the miscreants in the port city.

Police sources said the deceased, Yasir Arafat Emon, 22, was a first year BBA student of the university. He was the son of an expatriate, Mohammad Eilias, and a resident of the Bhorapukur Par area under the Bakalia police station in the port city.

Yasir died at around 4pm in Dhaka’s United Hospital, the sources added.

According to sources, Emon and his friend Saddam Hossain protested against some muggers in the city’s Dewanbazar area when the latter had attempted to snatch a mobile phone set from a pedestrian. The muggers went away after the duo protested. Later that day, however, they attacked the two and shot Emon and lacerated Saddam.

Police said Emon was admitted to the Chittagong Medical College Hospital but was later shifted to Dhaka and Saddam is still hospitalised and in critical condition.

Emon’s uncle, Abu Musa, claimed that his nephew’s killers are marked miscreants of the area. His uncle said they will lodge a case with police station in this regard.

Mohammad Mohsin, officer-in- charge of the Bakalia police station, said they are conducting drives to apprehend the culprits.
