Jugantor editor, publisher discharged from defamation case

A Dhaka court has discharged the then editor, publisher of the daily Jugantor and the chairman of Jamuna Group in a defamation case filed in 2003.

Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Alamgir Kabir Raj has passed the order on Wednesday afternoon.

The discharged are Golam Sarwar, the then editor of the newspaper, publisher Advocate Salma Islam (MP) and Chairman of Jamuna Group Nurul Islam Babul.

In the order, the court said petitioner Mirza Abbas, the then housing and public works minister, did not mention the source nor quote anyone regarding the defamatory statement.

It also said Mirza Abbas did not file any complaint with the Press Council and as per section 500 of the Penal Code, the accusation is unacceptable.

On November 2, 2003, Mirza Abbas filed the defamation case with Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court.
