DMCH emergency services halted

Update : 06 May 2014, 09:24 AM

Medical services at the emergency unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital have been halted following a clash between the students of Dhaka University and intern doctors of the hospital.

Two students of Dhaka University were injured in the clash that triggered over a trivial matter on Tuesday afternoon.

Injured Ashik and Jasim have been admitted to DMCH.

DMCH police outpost Inspector Mozammel Haque said: “Miraz’s friends Ashik and Jasim came to DMCH to pay visit to his ailing mother at around 1pm.”

However, they locked into a quarrel with the intern doctors of DMCH over riding on the lift. At one point, they tussled inside the lift. Later, the intern doctors beat them severely, he said.

Following the incident, DMCH Director Brigadier General Mostafizur Rahman called an emergency meeting where the DU unit Chhatra League Secretary Omer Sharif was present and he apologised to them over the matter, Mozammel said.

Meanwhile, some 30 students of Shahidullah Hall vandalised the emergency and casualty unit of DMCH after Omer came out of the meeting, he added.

Later, DMCH interns took position in front of the emergency and casualty unit and locked the main gate protesting the vandalism around 1:30pm, forcing services at the emergency unit to be halted.
