‘We have failed to build Bangladesh in the spirit of the Liberation War’

Update : 05 May 2014, 07:24 PM

Liberation War Affairs Minister AKM Mozammel Haque said the administration was  ordered to stop the criminal activities of Jamaat-e-Islami within two months.

Addressing a discussion to mark the 85th birth anniversary of Jahanara Imam on Saturday, the minister also said if the administration failed to prevent Jamaat’s terrorism, he would ask the freedom fighters to take action.

“We have failed to build Bangladesh in line with the spirit of the Liberation War in 1971,” the minister said discontentedly, blaming the people’s “disunity” for the present strength of Jamaat.

“As we have failed, Jahanara Imam formed ‘Ekattorer Ghatok Dalal Nirmul Committee’ to unite the people against the Jamaat,” Mojammel said.

In his speech, acting president of the committee Shahriar Kabir condemned the planning minister’s request to take money from pro-Jamaat Islami Bank for the Padma Bridge project.

“Terrorism cannot be contained while taking money from the Jamaat and patronising the godfathers of militancy, fundamentalism and terrorism.”

The discussion was chaired by Justice Syed Amirul Islam, an adviser of the committee.
