Shipping police soon to prevent extortion

Shipping police will start working soon to ensure security on the riverine route, Shipping Minister Shajahan Khan has said.

The minister made the statement after a meeting on ensuring security on the riverine route at the conference room of the home ministry.

“We have already completed the activities for the formation of the shipping police and it would start working soon,” he said.

Shahjahan Khan said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina would formally inaugurate the shipping police. Initially a total of 730 staff of the shipping police would start working.

“Centering, lifting and trading of sand, incidents of extortion and robbery have taken place and we have identified such areas including Muktarpur, Basila and Keraniganj,” he added.

He said a committee headed by a joint secretary of the home ministry has been formed, and local level committee will also be formed.

“Following the recommendation of these committees, steps would be taken to prevent extortion and robbery on the riverine route,” said the minister.
