Marine Safety Week begins

Update : 03 May 2014, 07:50 PM

Marine Safety Week 2014 began yesterday aiming at raising awareness about people’s security in water vessels and on water routes.

The week will be observed through various programmes across the country, including rallies and awareness activities on safe shipping.

The president and the prime minister issued separate messages wishing success of the event this year.

In his message, President Abdul Hamid said it was of higher importance for the country as most of the internal and the international trades rely on river and sea routes. He also called upon all concerned to abide by the laws to ensure marine safety.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said the government had taken various measures to reduce accidents in water routes that include increasing the security of river ports, modernising trainings of marine officers and navigators, and building mass awareness about marine safety.

The premier hoped that all relevant institutions and agencies would be more active in ensuring environment-friendly and safe travel in river routes.
