The Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) has issued restriction on drive in the city by plainclothes police until further instruction to prevent abduction and kidnapping in the port city.
The decision came at a meeting held at the CMP headquarters around 3pm on Friday with CMP Commissioner Md Shafiqul Islam in the chair.
However, plainclothes police can conduct drives in some cases, but they have to get special instructions from the deputy commissioner (DC) concerned and the team must have some members in uniform, a CMP official said.
Additional DC Babul Akhter of the Detective Branch of CMP told the Dhaka Tribune: “If any civil-dressed police team from the outer area of the CMP wants to conduct drives in the city area, they have to inform the DC concerned.”
The police have also instructed city dwellers to inform the local police station about such drives.
“Check the identities of plainclothes law enforcers if they use civil vehicles during the drive,” the CMP urges people.
Checking at the entry points of the port city has been increased and vehicle owners have been instructed to remove black or tinted glasses of their vehicles.
