Jamaat man killed in Satkhira ‘gunfight’

An activist of Jamaat-e-Islami has been killed in a “gunfight” with police in Debhata upazila of Satkhira early Tuesday.

The deceased was identified as Sirajul Islam, a Jamaat activist of Chiledanga village under Debhata upazila.

Police said Sirajul was a suspected criminal in different cases including the murder of Parulia Awamil League leader Raihan and cutting of trees.

Debhata police station Officer-in-Charge Md Jalal Uddin has confirmed about the death to the Dhaka Tribune.

He said: “Acting on a tip-off, a team of police raided the area in the early hours of Tuesday when the Jamaat members hurled cocktails targeting at the police.”

In retaliation, police fired 10 rounds of bullets that triggered the gun fight.

At one stage, Sirajul received bullet wound while his associates fled the spot.

Later, he was taken to Shokhipur Hospital where duty doctor declared him dead.

The OC said: “Two police members have been injured in the incident and two arms have been recovered from the spot.”
