A young girl attempted to commit suicide by taking sleeping pills at the Juvenile Correction Centre at Konabari of the district on Monday afternoon.
The girl, Anika Hauqe Seraji,16, was taken to hospital on a vulnerable condition hours after the suicide attempt has been taken.
Dr. Sumon Chandra Roy, a physician of emergency department of Gazipur Sadar Hospital told the Dhaka Tribune: Seraji consumed 20 sleeping tablets simultaneously at around 10am. She was brought in the hospital at 3pm.
Doctors quickly referred her to Dhaka Medical College Hospital as her situation was dubious, he added.
Doctors said Anika took 20 Rivotril tablet and her liver may face serious consequences as she did not receive treatment in time.
Anika told the doctor that she wanted to get rid of the torment of the correction centre as the people used to torture her .
The authority of the centre tried to hide the issue and did not bring her to medical care throughout the day.
Assistant caretaker of Konabari juvenile correction centre, Taslima Begum, declined to reveal the causes behind the incident.
