The bodies of three suspected Yaba traders have been recovered from the estuary of Naf river near Saint Martin Island on Friday morning.
The deceased are Amin Majhi of Shahpori Island, Md Kalu of Maheshkhali and Jahir Ahmed of Islampur.
Saint Martin Coast Guard Station Commander Lt Shahid told the Dhaka Tribune: “Acting on a tip-of, coast guard members conducted a drive near Chheredia Island in the morning. Sensing the presence of the coast guards, a gang of Yaba traders opened fire on us that triggered a gunfight, leaving some criminals injured.
However, the bullet-wound Yaba traders managed to flee. Later, three bullet-hit bodies were recovered from Naf river. We are yet to be sure whether those of the injured Yaba traders,” he added.
Three coast guard members-- MA Samad, AB Faisal and Amanullah-- sustained injuries during the gunfight, said Saint Martin Coast Guard Station Commander Lt Harun-ur-Rashid.
Cox's Bazar police Anwar Hossain said: “We have sent those bodies to the Sadar Hospital morgue."
However, Coz's Bazar additional Police Super Tofail Ahmed said: “Although the coast guard members are yet to confirm the death of three Yaba traders, we have came to know that those bodies are of those Yaba traders, who received injuries during the gunfight.”
“Investigation is underway.”
