A Jamaat leader has been injured in a “gunfight” between police and his associates at Maheshwarkati in Ashashuni upazila early Friday.
The victim was identified as Kabir Hossain, president of no 4 ward of Shobhanli union parishad and son of Jamal Uddin Sardar of Bakra village in the upazila.
Police said acting on secret information, a team of police arrested Kabir from Bakra area in the evening on charges of violence.
Later police launched a drive along with Kabir in Maheshwarkati area at about 3am in an attempt to recover firearms in his possession.
Sensing presence of police, associates of Kabir opened fire on the law enforcers, forcing them to retaliate with firing that triggered a gunfight.
Kabir sustained bullet injuries during he incident.
He was admitted to Satkhira Sadar hospital.
Ahsan Habib, officer-in-charge of Ashashuni police station, said Kabir was wanted in five cases.
