The students of Shahjalal University of Science & Technology (SUST) have observed a day-long strike on Thursday demanding immediate dismissal of Assistant Professor Nasir Uddin for his alleged involvement with sexual harassment.
The students called the strike to mount pressure on the authorities concerned to meet their demand.
Earlier on Tuesday, the SUST syndicate took punitive action against Nasir Uddin, a teacher of the Public Administration department, and its two staff members on charge of sexually harassing a female student.
However, the action could not appease the students demonstrating on the campus demanding for life expulsion of Nasir Uddin.
Spokesperson of the agitating students Shariful Islam told the Dhaka Tribune that students observed the strike peacefully and joined the movement as their demand was not met.
Another fresh agitation programme will be announced on Saturday if the university authority do not change their stand, he said.
SUST Proctor Himadri Shekhar has said: “Students should consider the academic atmosphere of the university.”
The SUST students were protesting as a female student of department of Public Administration was allegedly harassed sexually by Abu Saleh, an employee of the department on March 30 and same allegation against Assistant Professor Nasir Uddin on April 8.
