The motorcade of a Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) and a police official has been attacked after a crackdown drive in Companyganj upazila, Sylhet.

At least eight people were injured during this time when police fired rubber bullets to dispel a crowd trying to set up a blockade on the road.

Prohibitory measures have been enforced by the authority for an indefinite period of time in Bholaganj Ropeway area from Monday after the incident.

Machines used to extract sand that harms the environment were destroyed in the crackdown on Tuesday, led by the department of environment.

Companyganj UNO Asif Bin Ikram, Officer-in-Charge Delwar Hossain and environment department's assistant director Mostafizur Rahman joined the drive.

Their motorcade was attacked in Bholaganj area in the afternoon, Companyganj OC Delwar Hossain said.

“Some people tried to block the road during this time which instigated the police to fire 14 rounds of rubber bullets to disperse them,” he said.

However, the OC could not specify who were the attackers. “They might have belonged to a group that is against such drives.”
