A pro-BNP and Jamat backed white panel teacher of Dhaka University has been sent to leave for indefinite period over an allegation of doing misbehaviour with his department’s chairperson.
The name of the teacher is Professor Dr. ABM Obaidul Islam, a teacher of Physics department and former secretary general of Dhaka University Teachers’ Association (DUTA).
He is also the convener of White Panel teachers’ of Science Faculty of DU.
Dr. Farid Uddin Ahmed, syndicate member of Dhaka University and also the president of DUTA has told about the matter to the Dhaka Tribune.
“The senate members took the decision against Professor Dr. ABM Obidul Islam on Sunday night in a meeting”, Farid said.
According to the sources, Obaidul engaged in a quarrel with Physics department chairman Professor Dr. Azizur Rahman, centring on a purchase committee meeting to buy some scientific instrument for the department.
During the quarrel, Obidul Islam became more angry and castigated chairperson with bad and harsh words.
Following the issue, Dr Aziz submitted a complaint letter to DU Vice Chancellor and DUTA demanding punishment to him.
When talked to Obaidul Islam, he denied the allegation of reproaching the department chairperson rather termed it as a politically motivated conspiracy.
“It is clear to everyone that it is political game as the syndicate members have taken the decision against me without the probe committee report,” Prof Obaidul said.
When talked to Farid Uddin, he said it’s a primary decision of the syndicate member against him. Farid, however, said Obaidul will get every facility during his leave including salary and other facilities.
A five-member probe committee has been formed to investigate into the issue, Farid said.
“Further action will be taken according the probe committee report.”
While tried to contact with Physics department Chairman Azizur Rahman, he was not available with his cell phone.
Meanwhile, DU White panel teachers have expressed great discontent to Dhaka Tribune over the decision.
They termed it a politically motivated decision and hoped that the fact of the incident will be disclosed soon after the investigation.
