Militancy, terrorism under control, claims IGP

Law enforcing agencies have kept terrorism and militancy under control although the people of the country were made to face a horrible spate of the terrorism in recent times, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Hassan Mahmood Khandker has claimed.

The police chief made the remarks while addressing the inaugural function of a workshop on the ‘Responding to Terrorism: Alternative Approaches’ as chief guest, held at Police Staff College in Mirpur in the capital on Monday.

“Terrorism and militancy in the country are now under control owing to the activities of law enforcing agencies,” the IGP said.

He, however, said in recent times, the people of the country had to witness and face the worst manifestations of crime and terrorism. The professional members of law enforcing agencies have faced them efficiently and they want to play a larger in curbing terrorism, he said.

Hassan Mahmood also said in the perspective of a globalised world, terrorism is no more an issue for any specific country but is a worldwide phenomenon, for which regional and international co-operation is essential to control it.

“The time has arrived to increase the efficiency of law enforcing agencies, to help them curb crime and put in place effective measures through coordinated ways,” the IGP said.

He added: “This workshop has been organised for the personnel of those agencies, who are working to curb crimes and terrorism in Bangladesh.”

According to police headquarters, the four-day long workshop has been organised jointly with the ‘Police Staff College Bangladesh’ and Singapore based ‘International Centre for Political Violence and Terrorism Research (ICPVTR)’.

A total of 21 personnel from police, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), Special Security Forces (SSF), Directorate of Forces Intelligence (DGFI) and National Security Intelligence (NSI) have been taking part in the workshop.

Presided over by Md Nazmul Huq, the Rector of the Police Staff College, Jolene Jerard, the manager of the ICPVTR, Additional IGP Zaved Patwary, also the chief of the Special Branch, and another Additional IGP Amir Uddin, among others, were present at the function.
