26 injured in Jamaat-police clash

At least 26 people including two members of police have been injured in a clash between Jamaat activists and the law enforcers in Harishpur area in Natore on Monday.

Injured police officials OC Aslamuddin and SI Nur Alam were admitted to Sadar hospital, Superintendent of Police Dr Nahid Hossain said.

Locals said Jamaat activists brought out a procession as part of the centrally declared programme demanding the release of their leaders including Nizami and Sayedee.

The Jamaat activists locked in a clash with police as they were barred in Harishpur bypass area.

Jamaat activists claimed at least 24 of them were injured as the police fired gunshots and lobbed tear shells on the procession.

District Jamaat Ameer Atiqul Islam Rasel told Dhaka Tribune that Jamaat leader Shamsul Islam Kallol received six bullet wounds. He was rushed to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital in critical condition.

Meanwhile, tear shells injures nearly 50 students of Harishpur High schools during the clash, which the Police Super denied as “rumours.”

However, according to the school authority three students of the school, Akash, Md Nur and Mahid Sheikh were admitted to local clinics.

SP Nahid later told Dhaka Tribune four have been arrested in connection with the clash.
