A villager has been gunned down and a school girl sustained bullet injuries as unidentified miscreants opened fire on them at Jurgachhari village under Laxmichhari upazila in the district on Saturday morning.
The deceased is Joy Kumar Chakma, 45, son of Tilok Dhan Chakma, while the injured school girl is Kalpa Rani Chakma, a class nine student of Laxmichhari Pilot High School.
Superintendent of district police SK Mizanur Rahman, quoting locals, said: “A group of 15-20 armed criminals attacked a house at Jurgachhari Para targeting the leaders of Parbattya Chattagram Jana Sanghity Samity (PCJSS) members and started firing. Sensing the danger, the PCJSS members escaped the scene. But unfortunately, the firing left villager Joy dead on the spot and Kalpa injured.”
Police recovered the body and sent it to Khagrachhari Adhunik Sadar Hospital while injured Kalpa Rani has been admitted at Chittagong Medical College Hospital, said police.
No report of arrest or case filing has been received till filing the news at 10am.
Villagers and PCJSS Laxmichhari Upazila unit President Jyotish Dewan claimed that the attack has been carried out by the members of United Peoples Democratic Front (UPDF).
However, district UPDF Press Secretary Niron Chakma denied their involvement with the killing.
