At least five people, including four border guard troopers, have been injured in a “gunfight” with yaba traders in Teknaf upazila, Cox's Bazar.
Law enforcers seized 50,000 pieces of the banned yaba tablets after the battle. A yaba trader Mohammad Ismail, 42, has been detained.
Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) troopers acting upon a tip-off engaged the traders with a shipment brought in from Myanmar, officials said.
Teknaf BGB 42 Adhinayak Lt Col Abuzar Al Zahid said the gunbattle took place at Moulvipara around 10:30pm on Friday.
“Four troopers Khorshed Alam, Mintu Das, Mohammad Mazid and Nurul Islam have been injured. A yaba trader, injured, has been detained.”
A group of upto six yaba traders opened fire on BGB personnnals in Moulvipara area, he said. The troopers were compelled to fire back.
“50,000 pieces of yaba were seized,” he added. Ismail said to have primarily confessed to have brought in the shipment from Myanmar.
Others fled to nearby villages, the official said. A case was filed with Teknaf Police Station in this regard.
