Update : 31 Mar 2014, 07:46 PM

The government has appointed 25 factory inspectors as part of fulfilling of US conditions for GSP facility.

“In the first phase, 25 inspectors have been recruited today (Monday) through Public Service Commission (PSC),” said Mikail Shipar, Labour and Employment Secretary.

The government will appoint a total 289 officials for factory inspections to fulfill a condition set by the US authorities for reinstatement of generalised system of preferences (GSP).

The recruited 25 inspectors will be first-class officials and more 42 inspectors of same status will be appointed at a later time.

A number of 222 inspectors to be recruited will be of second-class status.

“The next appointment will be made within a week,” the secretary said, adding that they were trying to amend relevant laws to facilitate the recruitment process.

Inspectors are being recruited from the BSC candidates who have been kept waiting for non-cadre jobs.

“Those second-class officials to be appointed will get promotion to first-class after a time in service. Hope, the waiting candidates will be interested,” said Mikail Shipar.

Appointment of factory inspectors was one of 16 conditions outlined in the Bangladesh Action Plan by the United States for GSP reinstatement.

The government says 13 conditions have already been met. Of the three conditions yet to be fulfilled include appointment of factory inspectors and allowing of trade unionism at the export processing zones (EPZs).

On June 27, 2013, the US government suspended Bangladesh’s trade benefits under the GSP in view of insufficient progress by the government in affording internationally recognised worker rights and workplace safety.
