In an effort to fill the gap emerging due to the absence of his mother, female Ansar officials at Dhaka Medical College Hospital are now taking care of the seven-month-old boy who was found abandoned on the floor of the hospital’s dental ward on Thursday.
A number of Ansar women at the hospital are looking after the child in shifts so that he does not feel the absence of his mother. The infant, who they named Siam, is undergoing treatment at bed 5 of ward 207.
Visiting the DMCH children ward yesterday, this correspondent met Rojina Akter, a female Ansar member, who was trying to help the child sleep. She said she had been looking after the baby since Thursday morning.
“Sometimes I take breaks to rest and change my uniform but mostly, I stay with him,” she said.
How can it be possible to abandon such a pretty baby, Rojina expressed disbelief, adding that she could not sleep last night as her affection for the child grew deeper.
Abdul Khaleq, chief of Ansar at DMCH, told the Dhaka Tribune that apart from Rojina, a few other female Ansar members were taking care of the child according to their schedule.
“Rojina mostly looks after the boy and she is being exempted from her regular duty as we think it is also our duty,” he said.
The boy was found in the DMCH dental ward on Thursday morning. A bag full of clothes was also found beside him. His parents might have left him as his head is a little bigger in size compared to what is considered normal.
Dr Taslima Ahmed of the children’s ward, however, does not think that the child has any critical disease. Some fluid might have filled his head, she told the Dhaka Tribune, adding that the boy was fine and only needed some extra care.
Asked about his treatment, Dr Taslima said some samples had been sent to laboratory for tests and she was waiting for the report.
“We will understand everything once that arrives. Until then, nothing can be said for certain,” she said.
